Three sources. Britain's railway stations are graded from the National Rail Enquiries Knowledgebase — the industry's own data, so a "some platforms" grade is the operator's own assessment. London comes from Transport for London's measured station data (published 3 August 2026), the only source that records the step and gap onto the train — so London stations are the only ones that can be graded for level boarding. Trams, metros and subways come from OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL), as no official dataset covers them. Outside London, no station is graded for level boarding, because nobody publishes it — National Rail records only whether a ramp exists. Always check with the operator before you travel, and tell us when reality doesn't match the data.

Why "step-free" isn't one thing

The rail industry advertises step-free access as though it were a single yes-or-no. It isn’t. There are two separate journeys, and a station can pass one and fail the other:

Street → platform. Lifts, ramps and level walkways from the entrance to the platform edge. This is what “step-free station” almost always means — and even here, the honest answer is often “to some platforms”.

Platform → train. The last metre. Old platforms and modern trains rarely line up, so you can arrive at the platform and still face a step up and a gap across — sometimes 20 cm of each.

That second gap is why the map is banded five ways instead of two.

What the map shows

Britain has 2,371 railway stations outside London, and National Rail grades every one of them. Only 778 — 33% — are step-free to every platform. A further 1,367 (58%) are step-free to some platforms, and 226 have no step-free access at all.

That middle number is the one that ruins journeys. “Partially step-free” usually means there’s a lift or ramp to platform 1 and a footbridge to platform 2. You can get there. Getting back is somebody else’s problem — usually yours, on a replacement bus, or in a taxi you have to argue for.

In London, 153 of 270 Tube stations — 57% — have no step-free access whatsoever. Holborn, Covent Garden, Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus: some of the busiest stations in the country, closed to a large group of people.

But look at the green pins. The DLR and London’s trams are level-boarding end to end — every station, no ramp, no booking, no asking. Every Elizabeth line station is step-free. These aren’t engineering miracles; they’re what happens when access is designed in rather than retrofitted apologetically decades later.

Where this data comes from

Britain’s railway stations. The National Rail Enquiries Knowledgebase — the industry’s own station data, the same source that feeds the official journey planners. It states each station’s step-free coverage, its accessibility category, whether a boarding ramp is available, and a written description of the route. We grade the map directly from it, so if the map says a station is partially step-free, that is the operator’s own assessment.

London. Transport for London publishes something better still: measured lifts, ramps, level walkways, and the actual step and gap between platform and train. That’s why London stations are the only ones graded for level boarding, and we validated our method against three dozen stations whose status is publicly known before publishing.

Trams, metros and subways. Manchester Metrolink, Tyne & Wear Metro, Sheffield Supertram, Nottingham, Blackpool, West Midlands, Edinburgh and the Glasgow Subway come from OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database Licence. These networks aren’t in the National Rail feed and have no equivalent official dataset — which is why the grey pins are all here. Most modern tram networks are level-boarding by design; the data simply doesn’t exist to prove it station by station.

The honest health warning. No station on this map outside London is graded for level boarding, because nobody publishes it. National Rail tells you whether a ramp exists — not whether you could roll on without one. And this is a planning tool, not a guarantee: lifts break, staff are absent, routes close for engineering work. Always check with the operator on the day. If a station fails you, the operator must still get you to your destination — including by accessible taxi at their expense.

Found something wrong?

Official data goes stale. A lift that’s been broken for eight months is still “step-free” in the feed. A ramp that’s supposedly available is no use if nobody on shift knows where it’s kept.
